All Saints Day, November 1, 2026
Dear friends,
Can you believe November is already here? As we enter this beautiful month, daylight saving time comes to an end, and our clocks fall back one hour on Sunday, November 1. We return to standard time, which means earlier sunrises and earlier sunsets.
For Catholics, November is especially poignant, inviting us to remember our beloved dead, pray for the souls in purgatory, celebrate the saints who have gone before us, and renew our hope in the resurrection. As the liturgical year draws to a close with the Solemnity of Christ the King, November also turns our hearts toward the final things: death, judgment, heaven, and the fulfillment of God…s Kingdom. At the heart of this month is a beautiful truth: love does not end with death. The communion of saints unites us in Christ, and our ultimate hope is eternal life with Him.
Of course, Thanksgiving Day gives us another wonderful opportunity to thank God for His abundant providence and blessings.
This weekend, the Solemnity of All Saints falls on a Sunday. On November 1, we celebrate all the saints in heaven — both those officially canonized by the Church and the countless holy men and women whose names are known only to God. All Saints… Day reminds us that holiness is not reserved for a select few. Every Christian is called to become a saint through ordinary acts of faithfulness, forgiveness, kindness, sacrifice, and love. What a blessing it is to realize that you and I are called to be saints, a mind-boggling concept but one that is true! With God…s grace, sainthood is possible and begins right where we are — in the ordinary circumstances of our everyday lives.
On Monday, November 2, we celebrate All Souls' Day when the Church remembers and prays for all the faithful departed, particularly those undergoing purification in purgatory before entering the fullness of God…s presence. What a beautiful expression of our faith to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for our departed loved ones! We will have three opportunities to celebrate Mass on that day: 8:00 a.m., 12:05 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. Please join us, write down the names of your loved ones, and offer them in prayer at the altar. We will continue to remember our beloved dead throughout the month of November. May our prayers be a source of comfort for us and a loving offering for those who have gone before us.
On Saturday, November 7, we will honor those who have died this past year with an annual Remembrance Mass at 10 a.m. I am grateful to our Funeral Ministry team who, along with the funeral sacristans, accompany those grieving the loss of their dear ones.
Let me now take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the many ways you continue to make St. John the Evangelist a vibrant and caring parish family:
First, a big thank you to Justin and Amanda Libak for coordinating this year's Trunk or Treat event on Friday, October 23. I was delighted to see so many children arrive with their parents and friends to enjoy the evening. I am grateful to everyone who decorated their trunks so creatively and shared so generously their time, talents, and, of course, candy! Thanks also to the many volunteers whose hard work made the event such a success. Over 1,000 children joined us this year for a truly festive family event. With so many saints walking among us, it was quite the sight! We thank God for the delightful weather that made the evening even more enjoyable.
Next, my sincere thanks to our entire SJE family for your generous donations of breakfast items to support the guests of Matthew's Hope. I am especially grateful to Janet Owens and her Feed My Flock volunteers - along with our amazing kitchen crew - for preparing and serving a hot breakfast on Tuesday, October 27. Matthew…s Hope shared this wonderful message on Facebook: “A huge THANK YOU to St. John the Evangelist Church Feed My Flock Ministry for your amazing, and much needed, donation to our Food Pantry! This group brought in 5 SUV‟s full of food. Nonperishable Single Serve Items to help restock our food pantry along with fresh fruit, pastries, oatmeal, egg casserole…s, milk, orange juice, and apple juice for breakfast.” What a tremendous expression of generosity! What the abundance of food, what touched my heart most was the joy on the faces of the guests. We also had the privilege of speaking with Merissa, the chef at Matthew…s Hope, who expressed her gratitude for our generosity. Her words captured the heart of Christian service beautifully: “How could we not be happy to see these people happy when we serve them?” When we share what we have with those in need, we do more than provide a meal; we communicate dignity, compassion, and the love of Christ. Thank you for being such a blessing to our neighbors, reminding us that the gospel comes alive whenever love is put into action.
Finally, congratulations to Chris and Kathy Bosch, recipients of the Family of the Month Award for October 2026. Thank you,
Chris and Kathy, for your joyful presence and for all you do through various parish ministries. Your generosity and faithful
service are wonderful expressions of how the Holy Spirit works in and through our lives. May God continue to bless you!
As we enter November, may the saints inspire us, may our prayers unite us with our beloved dead, and may gratitude fill our hearts as we count our many blessings. Let us continue to be a parish family that prays together, serves together, and grows together in holiness.
Have a blessed week!
With love,
Fr. John
